INTRODUCTIONS THROUGH ALTOID TINS

Performance:

Students will become sculptors with their canvas being an altoid tin. They will work with a variety of materials including sculpey clay, paint, found objects, etc. to create an object that reflects who they are to people that may not know them very well and who they are at the core. Peers will view their work and try to understand what they are working to express.

Enduring Understandings:

Through the utilization of symbols and materials, students will express themselves through their artwork.

Objectives:

- Students will be able to explain what they see, what it reminds them of, and how they think it might portray identity after looking at the work of contemporary artists including Tim Okamura, Frida Kahlo, Kay Kang, Yinka Shonibare, María Martínez-Cañas, Sonya Clark, and Chen Zhen.

- Students will be able to ideate for their altoid tin project through answering questions on planning slides, sketching, and researching.

- Students will be able to successfully use materials including but not limited to sculpey clay, paint, paper, fabric, and glue given to create a finished altoid tin sculpture.

- Students will be able to successfully develop a piece that shows understanding of craftsmanship (no paint smudges, clean and consistent use of sculpey and found objects), conceptual development connected to their own identity, and developing `skill with materials including sculpey clay, paint, paper, and fabric.

- Students will be able to critique their peers, and write about what their peers are doing well, what they can improve upon, and what they think their piece is conceptually depicting.

- Students will be able to understand and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their piece in terms of how they are using materials including sculpey clay, paint, paper, and fabric, and reflect on how they are thinking about their identity.

- Students will be able to use the feedback of peers and teachers to apply the skills (sculpey clay, fabric, paint, critiquing, identity concept) they learned in this project to further develop their future sculptural goals.
