Natural Materials in Art
In this project, we will be experimenting with different pigments and tools found in nature, such as sticks, rocks, grasses, spices, and berries, to make an abstract painting. This will be relevant to the students because they are exposed to the natural world all the time, and can start to see the beauty in the natural world after learning how to use it in art.
Essential Understanding
Artists and designers use natural materials to make art.
Learning Targets
I can experiment with natural materials to create drawings and paintings that incorporate color and texture.

I can explain how artists and designers use natural materials as a way of incorporating color and texture into their art.
Key Concepts
1.After introducing the four stations through brief demonstrations, (spices, berries, rocks/charcoal, plant material/dirt), using natural materials students will be able to successfully create experimental drawings and paintings that incorporate color and texture.

2.After looking at contemporary artists, students will be able to explain how artists and designers use natural materials as a way of incorporating color and texture into their art.

Studio Habit: Stretch and Explore
For this class, the students listened to jurassic sound effects in order to "time travel" back in time. The learning target it to explore with different organic materials in order to feel what its like to create with materials that were used before modern materials were created. Students were encouraged to stretch and expand their ideas of ways in which they can make art. Students were encouraged to explore the different ways they can use natural materials to make art.
In this video, the student is stretching and exploring their use of sand and water to create a design. The student figured out that adding water on top of the sand bring out the natural pigments.
In this video, the student is stretching and exploring their use of berries to make vibrant colors. The student is using a dabbing technique to create dots to be added on to by other materials.
In this video, the student is stretching and exploring their use of berry juice to write out their favorite quotes and things that are special to them. This student chose to represent their love of dogs and their family.
In this video, the student is stretching and exploring their use of rose petals and water. The use of the rose petals changed the pigment of the water to be painted with.
In this video, the student is stretching and exploring their use of berry juice. They work to make broad strokes with the pigment, and use a layering technique to bring depth to the artwork.
This student enjoyed using their finger as the main tool to create swirls in the sand. They also added water to the sand to bring out the natural pigments onto the paper.
These were the tools we used for one of the stations. This station in particular, we used spices and water to bring out the pigments from the spices, and used sticks and grasses as tools. The students were asked to explore the different ways they could have the spices create texture using these tools
This student used the charcoal to make a smiley face and used their finger to smear the material. They also used their finger to make other marks as a boarder for the image. They enjoyed using the rocks to spread the material.
This student used berries and spices to create a splatter paint effect. They enjoyed spreading the spices and berries to show the varieties of colors and textures. The student stretched and explored these new materials that they have not worked with before in an art class.
This student used mostly berry juice and spices mixed with water to create large strokes of the material. The student enjoyed the variety of colors they could create. They gravitated towards the way their could layer the materials to create depth and texture.
This student explored the how spinning the material could create a swift texture to the piece. The student enjoyed using the rocks at the table to make spread the material even further. The student stretching and explored their use of charcoal by using the form of the charcoal itself to make shapes and designs.
