Class #3
Project Description:
For this project students had the chance to make an animal. They started with coming up with ideas about what creature they were going to create that combined two creatures. Students in previous weeks were introduced to many introductory clay techniques, and during this class students could apply all those skills to a new creation. The animal project allowed for students to develop creative thinking skills, by thinking of ways in which they could combine two different objects. Students went through the processes that artists go through, they started with ideation, and thinking about possibilities. They went through this process in a similar way that artists often do, by looking at inspiration photos, and then they developed what their going to create. Once they had their specific ideas, they started the creation process. Students created their creatures by using skills they learned in the demonstration as well as in previous classes. In today’s art exploration students had the opportunity to explore the medium of clay further through the creation of a combination of two animals.
Essential Understanding:
Artists use materials to create objects that represent real life in an abstract way. Artists explore ways of thinking about making.

Intended Outcomes:
-
Students will be able to define abstract vs naturalistic in terms of ceramics by demonstrating their knowledge through thinking of realistic animals and how they can combine them to create an abstract representation of an animal.
-
Students will be able to create a pinch pot that is flipped to create the base of their animal
-
Students will be able to connect two animals together, and think of what elements from each animal they would like to use by effectively creating elements of each of their animals and combining them.
-
Students will be able to create a finished piece that combines the techniques learned during the demonstration with their own ideas of two animals and their way of combining them.
-
Students will be able to reflect on their piece and others; by presenting their piece to the class and guessing other classmates animal combinations in their finished pieces.
Skills:
-
How to deal with viewpoints in opposition to your own.
-
Staying on task, and developing task if finished with nothing to do.
-
Cooperation
-
Listening to instruction
-
Creative expression
