Project Description:

Today students had the opportunity to further express themselves through the use of color on the objects they have made throughout the semester. Students learned about the ways in which glazes worked, and the ways in which artists use color in order to further the concepts behind their work. Students looked at the glazes once they were fired on test tiles in order to get a better understanding of what a glaze would look like once it was fired. Students then had the chance to come up with ideas that would represent what they wanted with color on their pieces. This is working with the idea of creating gifts for someone important in their life. We asked students at the beginning of class to think about who they might want to give each of these pieces to, and then think about the colors that they would want to use in order to make that gift be something that person would enjoy. Students came up with ideas about sports teams that people enjoyed watching, as well as their favorite color or colors. This allowed for students to get thinking about what colors they may want to make their pieces. Students then actually began glazing their pieces, and making decisions about final colors and mixtures of colors. In today’s art exploration students learned about ways in which they can express themselves and feelings they have in a work of art, as well as techniques for creating color on a work of art.

Essential Understanding:

Artists use color to express ideas or feelings in their work, and explore this through different techniques with color application

Intended Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to define glazing  by demonstrating their knowledge through application.

  • Students will be able to successfully glaze their pieces while also being creative by effectively glazing all three of their pieces.

  • Students will be able to connect their experiences with their color choices and how to effectively express those influences in their work.

  • Students will be able to create a finished piece that combines the techniques learned during the demonstration with their own expression of color.

  • Students will be able to reflect on their piece and others; by presenting their piece to the class and discussing their glaze choices and techniques.

Skills:

  • Problem solving when faced with challenges.

  • Experimentation and flexibility in ideas.

  • Cooperation.

  • Purposeful application of ideas.

  • Listening to and following instruction.

  • Creative expression.

  • Sharing.

Documentation:

This student was making a creature that was mean. They wanted it to be bipedal and horned, and were attentive at creating the curvature of the horns.

This student did not really go with the monster theme and decided to be a little more independent. He created objects that he had more interest in, such as the mandala shown in the image.

This student struggled to come up with an underlying structure for his monster so he worked through the fundamentals of a creature and decided to create a monster inspired by Sully from Monsters Inc.

This student made a fish for his creation with the polymer clay. He was working very independently, and thinking for himself. He was motivated to make what he was wanting to make, which allowed for a lot of exploration to happen, as well as gaining understanding of the material through play. He was creating object after object that allowed for him to greatly understand his connection to the material.

This student was great at preserving with the wheel even though she was struggling with some of the techniques. There were a couple of times when her clay came off of the wheel because it was not well attached, but she was always willing to keep trying. She became more and more successful each time, which was awesome to see. She kept working until she made a pot that she was happy with, which showed a lot of growth and dedication to her making process.

This student made a monster that was supposed to be snake-like in appearance. They were a mean monster, and the student made it with attentiveness to the ways the colors reflected the creature.

This student made a dragon relating to their love of the popular TV show, Game of Thrones. This was an ice dragon that has lightning powers. This student struggled with having the wings stay poised to the right degree before oven baking.

The first student in the video needed hand over hand assistance but he really enjoyed throwing and was very content with the final outcome. The second student was very skeptical about throwing at first but after her first attempt and some assistance she picked it up quickly and was doing very good on her own. The third student was successful because she kept working at making a pot even when she was having a difficult time. This showed that she cared about what she was doing, and was engaged in the learning. She kept trying and in the end made a successful pot.
