Quality Standard 2: Teachers establish a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for a diverse population of students.

Overall in standard 2 I think I am proficient. I work towards creating a positive environment for learning that is inclusive of all students in my classroom. In this standard it is important that I focus on creating a classroom that students are excited about what we are learning about, they are able to connect to their own interests. In art, I have found that allowing students to research their own inspirations allows for them to find artists that are interesting to them and they have a connection to. This semester, our first lesson plan allowed for me to get an understanding of how I might be able to incorporate independent research into my future classroom. It also allows for everyone to share what they have learned, and therefore gain interest in a variety of different artists. In art specifically, it is important to talk about artists from all cultures. In this sense, I have researched and studied art from a variety of cultures so that I am able to teach students about these artists. It is also important that I differentiate for students in my class. My goal is for all students to learn and grow in my class, whatever that means for them. Some students will come in with years of art experience, some may have very little experience. Part of my job is to meet students where they are at and help them learn and grow from there.

Element B: Teachers demonstrate an awareness of, a commitment to, and a respect for multiple aspects of diversity, while working toward common goals as a community of learners.

Our first lesson plan was focused on introducing students to a variety of different contemporary artists. We thought for this it was important to include a diverse group of artists. Artists come from a variety of different backgrounds, and it is important that students see art from a variety of different people. So often art history is spoken of from a Western male perspective, and while that is important, it is also important to hear from everyone who was making art at that time, from all cultures and all communities. Thinking about diversity in the art that we show students allows for students to really get a more diverse perspective of contemporary art and art history, therefore allowing for a more well rounded art education.

Element D: Teachers work collaboratively with the families and/or significant adults for the benefit of students.

Parents/guardians are an important part of a students life, and it is important to include them in their students learning. This not only helps the students success, but it also helps parents feel more comfortable reaching out and discussing anything they may want to. Oftentimes it can be difficult for students to talk about things that are going on at home, that might be affecting their schoolwork. However, being in close communication with parents can help open this discussion and allow for me to help the student the best I can. In my management plan, I go into specifics on how I may go about approaching student behaviors, and making connections with parents can be a valuable part of this.
