Cyberbullying, Digital Drama, and Hate Speech

Sienna Bosch

Cyberbullying and digital drama are unfortunately becoming prevalent in our world, because it is so much easier to hide behind a screen and say something hurtful than it is to say it to someone's face. It is also something that can really impact the mental health of people especially teenagers. Teenagers are at a vulnerable time in their lives because they are trying to figure out who they are, and explore who they are. This makes them especially susceptible to hurtful comments. I think it's important for us to be aware of how we make other people feel, this builds empathy and a better understanding of others, who they are and where they come from.

I think talking about cyberbullying in the classroom can be really valuable. It can get students thinking about how their words and actions affect others. This also allows for students to understand what they can do if they or someone they know are being hurt by cyberbullying. It is important to talk with students about how they can de-escalate cyberbullying, and how they can prevent cyberbullying. This is valuable as students are working through this important but vulnerable time in their lives.

I think another valuable aspect of this is modeling positive comments and posts on social media. It is important for students to be shown what positive online behavior looks like. This means on the Instagram for the class responding to and posting with positive comments only. This models for students positive online behavior.

This can also be incorporated into the lessons in the class. I think this could be incorporated through discussion about cyberbullying, and then creation of work surrounding this topic. Students could make pieces that show what it might feel like to be cyberbullied or how it does feel. These could then be presented as pieces that get all students thinking about their actions and how that makes others feel.
